The Swedish mentality for getting work done in a home is mind-boggling to me! You thought the cable guy's "window" of time when he said he could come was big! Our building is in the process of updating, as I have said before. A couple of big things are going on right now. I told you before that it took us MONTHS to get the proper internet cable run. Now, they are working on the doors and radiators. We were told (through notices posted in the building entry way), that workmen would be here to begin draining the radiator system and replacing valves on all radiators starting at 7:30 Monday morning. We would need to be available, in our apartments, for the men to come in and do the work at any time this week until Friday! If we were not home, they would have to stop the whole job and we would be responsible for paying for the entire building to be done at a different time! Well, trust me when I say that no work man has ever arrived before 9 so far this week and no one has come to my place at all. Fortunately, Tabitha just has one test at school each week so she and I can play tag team to be sure that one of us is home at all times. Ridiculous! We are also supposed to have someone come and put deadbolts on each apartment door. Again, we are to be home from 7:00 until 6 on Wed, as well as possibly on Thursday or Friday. We are also to have all furniture, drapes and decoration at least one meter away from all radiators. We have furniture sitting out in the middle of rooms, plants on the floor, radiator tops removed…. This is going to make me crazy!
Next, they are putting in French doors and balconies on each apartment… I can only imagine the time frame for that one!
After Tabitha's exam this morning (Economics… She felt that it went very well), I headed out to a surprise birthday party. We surprised our friend, Michelle with a cooking party at a local cooking school with a professional chef. It was so much fun! I learned to scale and filet sea bass, which I then seared and baked.
We all had such a good time cooking, laughing and chatting! Unfortunately, I had to leave before we could eat! I had a dentist appointment for an old filling that is really bothering me so I had to go…
At the grocery store this afternoon, I heard a woman speaking in very American English. She sounded frustrated and confused so I walked over and offered to help. She is in the process of moving here, had just gotten off the plane and couldn't find what she needed or get her credit card to work. I was able to help her out, welcome her to Stockholm, and talk to her for a little bit. I gave her my email address as well to help with any future questions. It felt good to be able to be the one offering assistance instead of needing it!
Quincy is finishing his last final exam as we speak!! Can you believe that his freshman year of college is already over?? I can't!
