On the Ice and On the Court

While Josh took the boys out for hair cuts this morning, Tabitha and I headed out to Vasaparken. This park is about a 15 minute walk from our house and has a beautifully plowed and maintained ice rink, in addition to a very popular sledding hill.  Tabitha and I had our ice skates and hit the ice for some skating. We had a great time and did not suffer a single fall!  Tabitha got a little nervous as the ice became more and more crowded so we left when we began to have more fear than fun.  It was amazing to watch all of the little, little kids who were not only very adept at skating but also very confident with their hockey sticks!

After leaving the park, Tabitha decided that we needed fika to end our activity properly.  We stopped in one of the many bakeries on our way home for some coffee and hot chocolate.
Coffee is such a huge deal and served with anything and everything all day long around here.  Decaf is never offered and rarely even seen.  It is expected that you will offer coffee to anyone that comes to your house, even service people!  But this little story, absolutely takes the cake!  A man served coffee to a would-be burglar who broke into his home!

Swedish people are so habitual about their foods and activities, it is really quite amusing.  On Friday nights, the tradition is called fredagsmys - "friday cosiness".  This just means that Friday nights are traditionally spent at home, being lazy and relaxing in front of the television.  But the tradition also involves tacos!  Most people here will have tacos for dinner on Friday!  I have no idea how tacos came to Sweden or how this started but it is something held sacred.  Another tradition is lördagsgodis, which I have mentioned before.  This is the Saturday morning treats/candies that kids are allowed (maybe even expected) to enjoy.  When Max and Calvin got their hair cut this morning, they were each offered a piece of candy.  Max readily accepted but Calvin turned it down.  The woman looked at him askance and said, "But, it's Saturday!"

Because it was overcast and warm (above freezing) all day today, it got dark quite early.  But, the snow was perfect packing snow so Josh and Max headed out to our little "backyard" and built a very tall snowman.  He won't be around long because the snow is quickly becoming a melted, dirty mess but he is pretty cool for now!

Sorry that I didn't finish or post my blog last night, but after dinner, we had to head out for Calvin's tennis match.  He is again playing in this ongoing tournament which he ended up winning last term.  He played two different boys last night and did quite well.  They just track the number of games that they can win in a 30 minute session.  He won 2 out of 5 in the first match and then 5 out of 8 in the next.  These will all be added up over the next 8 weekends and in the end, the player with the most wins will the the champion.

It is so fun for me to watch him play because I actually know the sport well!  He has gained tremendously in his abilities since we moved here!
