American Morals

Glad Alla Hjärtans Dag!
Happy Valentine's Day!  I will type up my blog before Josh gets home from work and we go out for our dinner to celebrate Valentine's Day.  The boys just got home from volunteering at the primary school Valentine's party.  They both baked two cakes for the cake walk and then ran the Bingo room for 2 hours after school.  They had a good time and were happy to earn their community service hours.  Max's class had a "secret santa" Valentine exchange today.  Most of the kids received candy from their secret person but Max got a Barbie doll from a friend of his.  He thought it was pretty funny but now doesn't quite know what to do with it.

I did my walk with my walking group this morning.  Our group continues to be big and even seems a little bigger each time, no matter what the weather.  We really have fun.  Today, I walked with a friend who happens to be Swedish!  She has lived outside of Sweden for 20 years though, pursuing her's and her husband's professional basketball careers.  She just moved back to Sweden in the fall with her three kids while her husband continues to play for a professional team in Italy.  She is really trying to adjust to being back in her home country after having been gone for so long.  It is really interesting to talk to her.  Who knows.  Maybe I will even work on my Swedish language skills with her one day!

When we walk, we kind of join up and then break off of various groups of people depending on their speed and whether they are taking any short cuts.  We also all meet up on the bridge (where we take a picture) and we all meet up at the end for fika.  This gives me the opportunity to become of part of various conversations along the way and to meet new people.  Today, I overheard two different conversations that were talking about what is considered to be a sort of prudish American sense of morality.  The Scandanavians were laughing at the fact that most Americans cannot enjoy the new "Wolf of Wall Street" movie because it is full of corruption, foul language and rewards for doing "bad things".  Another conversation was about a woman trying to have a baby after age 40.  She very nonchalantly said that "of course, she wouldn't carry it to term if it weren't healthy".  Hmmmm.... Whether I think Americans have a stronger sense of morality than other cultures or not, both conversations made me uncomfortable and made me stop and think.
