Våffeldagen!

Happy International Waffle Day!  This is a holiday truly celebrated in Sweden as a tribute to the wonderful and versatile light pastry, and to the beginning of spring!  Well, today was not a good example of the beginning of spring, as it got quite cold and windy, but we made sure to enjoy the waffles!

Nichole was brave enough to go to school with Tabitha today and to meet all of her classmates and experience life as a 12th grader in an International school.  She found it very interesting and is ready to go back again tomorrow.  She was amazed at the freedom and independence that the students are given.  Along those same lines... Max had his first interscholastic basketball game today against the other international school in Stockholm.  He would not allow me to attend the game as "parents don't do that here" (which is true but still makes me sad) but he enjoyed himself, and says that he played much of the game and played well.  The funny thing was that the game was played during school hours, at a gym across town, and the kids were allowed to take the subway home after!
While the kids were all doing their things, I took Janis to meet my "Out and About Club" and to tour the old Swedish prison on an island called Långholmen.  This is Stockholm's version of Alcatraz but after closing down in the 1970's and falling into disrepair, some genius entrepreneur turned it into a conference center and hotel!  Our club took a wonderful guided tour to see the cells and to learn the history.

After leaving my club girls to lunch, Janis and I headed out with time to hit another museum before the kids got home from school.  This time, we headed to Södermalm to tour the photography museum, called Fotografiska.  Fantastic photography exhibits by 3 world renowned photographers topped off by a wonderful bistro with gorgeous views of the Baltic and Stockholm to be enjoyed while we consumed our waffles.

When the girls came home from school, they headed out almost immediately to take another guided walking tour.  This one of the old town area of Gamla Stan.  They enjoyed it immensely despite the cold and gathered a whole bunch of history and anecdotes.
An article ran today about an earlier topic that I had hit upon.  About Swedes swearing often and in English.  You can read it here.
