Max spent the night at a friend's house last night so it was just the four of us and the dog around the house today. It seemed so cold outside when we headed out for a walk, but when I compare the temperatures to my reference points at home, it is not so bad! Stockholm has such funny rocky hills that just seem to pop up out of nowhere and are quite steep. We have the one across the street from our house but there is another one just down the street and behind the public library. I love these hills because you can get such a great view of the city from all different angles. I just read somewhere that most of the city was leveled during development which explains why these hills just seem to pop up but not why they weren't leveled too. Anyway, we are glad that they weren't, as they provide us with some great walking areas.
The park that we went to today is called the Observatoriekullen or Observatory Hill. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences built the obervatory in 1753 and installed this sculpture of the Centaur by Sigfrid Fridman in 1939. Some day, we will have to go into the observatory and use the telescopes but for today, we just walked around the admired the views of the city.
In this picture, if you look off into the distance, you can see the tower that we were in last Saturday to see a different perspective of the city.
After Calvin came home from his tennis lessons, we started our Swedish lessons with a new teacher. This woman has been teaching Josh up in Luleå one day per week for a couple of weeks and has really been great for him. Since our local teacher was so obviously not working out, we decided to try our lessons over Skype with Eva Marie. It worked out beautifully and after a one hour lesson each, we all felt like we actually learned how to say something! Pretty exciting!
Since it has been dark since shortly after 3 today, I have been walking around the house reminding everyone that "it is not midnight!" On a school/work day, it is not so bad but on a lazy Saturday, when it looks and feels like the middle of the night, it is hard to convince anyone to do much of anything besides sitting on the couch with a video game or a good book!
