Hungarian Cooking and Orienteering!

Big day for us today with fun activities scheduled for the boys and for me.  Max and Calvin got to spend half of their school day, out and about doing an orienteering race with their classmates. They were each assigned a partner, given a way to do electronic check ins and then sent on their way to find the end destination. The morning was cold with a temperature of only 30 but the sun was shining and they had a great time.   They had done a quick introduction to orienteering in gym class one day but had never done any other. Both were assigned experienced partners by the teacher so they wouldn't get lost. Max's group went to a spot that was just a twenty minute walk from school but Calvin's group did some walking and a train ride to get to their starting spot. Calvin's group went in the afternoon so when they were finished, they were allowed to come home. Calvin's real orienteering kicked in then since he didn't know where he was, let alone how to get home! (Don't worry, he could have gone back to school with a teacher). Instead, he went to the closest subway station, read the map, found the train to central station and then knew the train to get home from there. No problem for my suddenly big city savy kid!
I had a totally my kind of day! I participated in my first meeting of the cooking club that I joined through the school PTA.  It was perfect! I got to spend the day in a beautiful Hungarian Embassy owned apartment while meeting lots of new friends and learning to cook and eat several Hungarian dishes. It was great! My new friends are from all over the world - Hungary, Italy, Denmark, Australia, Mexico, Finland, India, Japan, the U.S., and South Africa! Fantastic and so interesting! Three of the women are moms of some of the kids that my kids are becoming friends with so that was extra nice!
