United Nations Day

Max and I headed out to school together this morning, carrying his cake and my baked goods for the class parties and the bake sale that were going on today.  It is never easy to carry everything by foot but in the rain and the wind this morning, it was especially not fun!  We made it however!  Today, was not only the classroom Halloween celebrations, but it was also United Nations Day.  This is definitely my favorite day in the International School's school year because the kids all dress up and show off their country pride.  They wear clothes or carry props representative of their home countries, and then they parade around the school grounds, cheering and singing.  They then all gather together to listen to a speech and show their excitement for living and working together.  It is really awe inspiring and uplifting to see these 500+ kids from more than 60 different countries, just interacting, not worrying about politics or past resentments.  Just caring about each other and about being kids!

Just in bringing in treats to share with their classes, they are very aware of which cultures and religions can eat what.  These are things that they never would have really thought about before!

The U.S. Ambassador gave a rousing speech and then the kids went inside to sing their National anthems and a variety of other songs.  Fantastic!
While we were complaining about standing out in the rainy cold, poor Josh was fighting the first big snowstorm of the year up in LuleƄ.
