Incredible 45th Birthday!

Wow! I certainly had an amazing day for my birthday! We finally had gorgeous weather in Iceland with sunshine, almost no wind and mostly clear skies! We headed out at 8 am in a rugged four wheel drive land rover with our guide and one other couple. We were then on the go for the next 18 hours. We climbed underground through a tiny hole to emerge in a beautiful cavernous snow-filled cave! Amazing sights. This was called the Batman cave because part of a Batman movie was filmed there.

We then drove for about an hour before hiking through water on ice covered rocks to get to a beautiful hidden water fall.

Next up where the black sand beaches on the south coast of Iceland. This was incredible with pillars of balsalt jutting up from the ocean floor.

Next, we drove and took some short hikes in a huge lava field, the largest in the world. 

After the lava field and the surrounding flood plains and volcanoes, we made our first contact with a glacier. Absolutely breathtaking! The ice was so blue!

We then drove on to the Glacier Lagoon where we saw icebergs, seals and some of the most breathtaking sights, I have ever seen.

Next up was some serious off-road driving to get to our hike to an ice cave.  Amazing blue ice and light shining through the ice!

We then spent a little time on the rugged coast before heading back home to Reykjavik. We covered 1000 kilometers in our 18 hours but it was worth every minute! Unfortunately the cloud cover was a bit too much for us to see any Northern Lights. Maybe next time...
